This week marks the first time since I was 16 years old that I don’t own a car. I sold my beloved Subaru Legacy GT Limited with a 5-speed manual and a stage 2 turbo a couple days ago. Was there anything wrong with it? No. Did I not like it anymore? Nope. Did I want a different car? No again.
I added it up and I’m spending a LOT of money to drive a car! $270/month for the car payment, $120/month for insurance, $200/month for gas to and from work… there are other costs, but those are the big ones.
I’m, at least for the summer, going to ride a motorcycle. I bought a 2005 BMW F650GS, a dual purpose bike. The costs here are $130/month for the loan, $65/month for gas and $20/month for insurance. The result is a 4-month savings of $1400!
Is this a perfect solution? Nope. There are going to be time when I’m going to need to drive more than one kid somewhere, and I’ll have to solve that problem when it arises.
I’ve had the bike for about 10 days and have put 350 miles on it. It isn’t as smooth and powerful as my last bike by any means, but this time isn’t about the HP it is about the MPG. My estimates are 60-62 MPG.
I’ll be posting more about my adventure on two wheels. Feel free to tune me out 🙂
